News Archive - May 2002Yorkshire v Hampshire - Frizzell County Championship 25.5.2025DAY 1
Yorkshire made a sterling comeback on the opening day of the Frizzell County Championship clash with Hampshire. The visitors made a positive start but after losing their 2nd wicket with the score on 181 Yorkshire stepped up a gear and Hampshire were reduced to 273-7 at the close of play. It was the best Yorkshire have bowled all season with Matthew Hoggard, Chris Silverwood and Steve Kirby all claiming deserved wickets. Hampshires total was largely thanks to a 145 run second wicket stand between Will Kendall and John Crawley but after Richard Dawson bowled out the latter for 79 Hampshire found the going much tougher. Hoggard re-arranged Kendalls stumps with an unplayable Yorker and Silverwood followed suit by removing Giles White with a similar delivery. Squad Announced for 2nd npower Test v Sri Lanka 25.5.2025Official Team Sponsor - Vodafone
England today named a 14-man squad for next week's 2nd npower Test Match v Sri Lanka at Edgbaston from May 30-June 3. The uncapped Glamorgan quick bowler Simon Jones, who attended the ECB's National Academy in Australia last winter, is added to the thirteen players called up for the 1st npower Test. Jones, 23, is the son of former Glamorgan and England pace bowler, Jeff. Excluding Glamorgan's current match against Sri Lanka, he has taken 13 wickets in First Class cricket this season at a cost of 21.38 including a career-best 6-45 v Derbyshire. Commenting on the selection, Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, said: "The Lord's Test showed that Sri Lanka have a very talented batting line-up and if we continue to play on bland surfaces that favour the batsmen, we need to have other options available in our bowling attack. "The two quickest English bowlers in County cricket at present are Simon Jones and Stephen Harmison of Durham. We did not consider Stephen for this Test Match due to injury, but we feel that this is a good opportunity for Simon Jones. "Simon is young and raw, but he has an outstanding natural asset in his speed. And we feel that we would like to have him at our disposal until we have had a chance to look at the pitch and assess how it will play. "We have decided to call-up 14 players for this Test Match as we need additional cover due to Dominic Cork's groin injury. But with a full Frizzell County Championship programme starting on Friday, there is a likelihood that any players left out of the final eleven will have the opportunity to play in the next round of Championship fixtures. Yorkshire v Essex- Benson & Hedges Cup 23.5.2025A high-quality century from England skipper Nasser Hussain ended Yorkshire's hopes of Benson & Hedges Cup glory at Chelmsford yesterday.
Hussain crafted a superb unbeaten 136 to steer Essex past their 238-run target with seven wickets to spare. The England star reserved special punishment for international team-mate Matthew Hoggard, blasting him for nine of his 18 boundaries, as he led Essex to success. It was a bitter disappointment to a Yorkshire side who are also struggling in the county championship. Their failure to make enough runs proved costly another 40 would have made all the difference. Indeed, they were on course for a score of around 280 after Chris Silverwood cracked a quick-fire 50 to lay the foundations. Silverwood played a hugely entertaining innings and hammered Ronnie Irani out of the ground with successive balls on his way to a 36-ball 50. But a middle-order collapse saw Yorkshire slip back to 149-6 and it took a great effort from Darren Lehmann (59) and Richard Blakey (34) to hoist the Tykes towards respectability. |
