Derek Fatchett Learning Centre 21.8.2024

Derek Fatchett was the Member of Parliament for Leeds Central constituency from 1983 1999. Born in Lincoln and coming from a working class background, he rose to become a formidable international statesman, politician and academic, winning respect and esteem both at home and abroad. He worked as a lecturer at Leeds University from 1974, became a Labour councillor for Wakefield in 1980, and a Leeds Member of Parliament from 1983. In 1997 he was appointed Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and then Privy Councillor in 1998.

He was a man whose values embraced equality of opportunity for all, not least within the field of education. His own experience at schools in Lincoln, and then at the University of Birmingham and the London School of Economics, clearly helped him towards reaching his optimum potential and to use his skills as educator and politician to help others follow his example.

Derek is a fine role model for young people from all walks of life. Without a doubt he would have been delighted to see the establishment of this educational facility at Headingley. It is a worthy memorial to his life and achievements one of which he would have been proud.
