News Archive - July 2002Yorkshire's Craig White named in 13-man England Squad 20.7.2025England Squad for 1st npower Test v India
Official Team Sponsor - Vodafone England today named a 13-man squad for next week's 1st npower Test Match v India at Lord's starting on Thursday. With Surrey's Alex Tudor ruled out through injury, the Yorkshire all-rounder Craig White is recalled to the squad together with the Derbyshire captain, Dominic Cork. Hampshire's John Crawley and uncapped Glamorgan fast bowler, Simon Jones, both named in the squad for the Old Trafford Test v Sri Lanka, are also included. Commenting on the selection, Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, said: "John Crawley came into the side for the 1st npower Test against Sri Lanka and acquitted himself well. There is no reason why he should be overlooked now as we want to be consistent in our selection policy. "The injury to Alex Tudor means that we need someone with batting capability in the number eight position. Depending on the balance of the side and the nature of the wicket, there could be an opportunity for either Dominic Cork or Craig White in this position. "Craig played well in India in the winter, making his first Test hundred, and although he had a few injuries that affected his bowling, he is now back to fitness and bowling well again. We feel his ability to reverse swing the ball could be useful if the Lord's wicket is as flat as it was against Sri Lanka whilst Dominic will give us another option if the wicket is more seamer-friendly. " Simon Jones is also an option for us as he has express pace and has been bowling well for Glamorgan in recent weeks. "The injury to Marcus Trescothick means that we will have to readjust our batting order and Michael Vaughan will open the innings with Mark Butcher - preserving the right/left combination which has served us well in the past. "We have had some injury problems ahead of this match- but we are fully aware of how important it is to start this Test series well as this an area we have sometimes fallen down on previously." Caddick has been slowly returning to fitness following a left side-strain injury, sustained during the third npower Test Match against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford. Whilst he began to bowl gently last Sunday, he was not considered fit for Somerset's Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy match today against Worcestershire. Trescothick is also unavailable for selection as a result of a fractured thumb, sustained while fielding during today's Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy semi-final fixture at Taunton. Match Reaction- C & G Quarter-Final 17.7.2025By Paul Dews,
For more Yorkshire Cricket news see the Yorkshire Evening Post each week night YORKSHIRE hero Anthony McGrath today dedicated his sides thrilling C&G; Trophy quarter-final victory to coach Wayne Clark and captain Darren Lehmann.McGrath top-scored with a tremendous 72 as Yorkshire beat Essex by virtue of fewer wickets lost in pursuit of an Essex total of 283-9.Weve had a terrible season and Im delighted for the coach and the captain, said McGrath. Theyve had their wars this season and Im really pleased we won it for them.McGrath has struggled for form this term, but he played the leading role in a sixth-wicket stand of 128 with all-rounder Gary Fellows. There was an element of confusion ahead of the final delivery, with the scores level, when Essex skipper Ronnie Irani and the Yorkshire batsmen sought confirmation of the rules. The rules keep changing and we werent totally sure, said McGrath. I thought at first wed messed up and in the end it was a bit of anti-climax winning the way we did.McGrath and Fellows came together when Yorkshire were reeling on 155-5, but the duo showed great courage in turning things around. It was a tough time to go in, added Fellows. We set ourselves a target for the last 18 overs and in the end were delighted that things came together and we got the win.Yorkshire will discover their semi-final opponents tonight. |
