After winning the toss at Headingley, Derbyshire elected to bat first and their opening batsmen made a good start.

Gait made 32 and Di Venuto 50 before Ryan Sidebottom struck twice. Selwood didn't last long coming in at number 4, he also fell to Sidebottom for only 2 runs.
