After winning the toss, Hampshire made quick inroads into the Yorkshire top order. Returning for his first county match of the season, man of the moment Michael Vaughan faced just seven balls for 1 run before being bowled by Wasim Akram. An impressive 60 not out from Michael Lumb, combined with a spirited 24 from Richard Blakey and some powerful hitting from Darren Gough (30 not out) allowed Yorkshire to close on 174 for 7.

Wickets were shared between the Hampshire bowlers with Mullally the pick, taking 3 for 22 off 14 overs.
