Gloucestershire versus Yorkshire
at The College Ground, Cheltenham
Sunday 3 August 2025
By Roy D Wilkinson
Yorkshire have played seven matches at Cheltenham in this competition, have won two and lost five.
The first of their two wins came in 1983. Chris Broad led the Gloucestershire batting with 96 and their total of 233 for 5 wickets off 40 overs presented a challenging target but enterprising batting by Geoff Boycott (39), Bill Athey (42) and Kevin Sharp (53) set Yorkshire firmly on the path to a winning 234 for 6 wickets with 5 balls to spare.
The only other win, in 1990, was also a high scoring affair with Gloucestershire making 226 for 6 after Tony Wright (57) and Bill Athey (80) added 104 for the first wicket. Martyn Moxon took 3 for 52 in seven overs.
After Ashley Metcalfe fell for 0, Moxon and Richard Blakey added 131 for the 2nd wicket. Moxon was run out for 68 but Blakey went through to the end the end with 100*. Victory was achieved by 7 wickets with 4.1 overs to spare.
The 1994 match produced 521 runs off 78 overs. Yorkshire set a very challenging 260, made in 39.4 overs but Gloucestershire were more than equal to the task and hit off the runs to reach 261 for the loss of 7 wickets in 38.2 overs. Mark Alleyne led the run charge with 102*.
Gloucestershire again made 261 in 1999 thanks to Robert Cunliffe (66) and a spirited 91* by Jack Russell. Yorkshire never recovered from 18 for 2 and were all out for 133 in 35.5 overs with Martyn Ball, with his off-breaks, taking 5 for 42 in nine overs.
Overall in this competition, in its many guises, Yorkshire have been scheduled to play 36 matches versus Gloucestershire. 31 have been completed, Yorkshire winning 15 and losing 16. There have been 5 ‘no results’.
