15, 16, 17, 18 July 2025
Of the eleven County Championship matches versus Durham, Yorkshire have now won eight and lost one with two draws.
The only loss was at Headingley earlier this season when Durham won by 167 runs.
Three of the matches have been at Chester-le-Street and Yorkshire have won them all. The 1996 match will be remembered for the century partnership of 110 between Chris Silverwood and Richard Stemp for the 10th Yorkshire wicket, taking the score from 225 for 9 to 335 all out. In the Durham reply only John Morris made a real contribution with 83 as Peter Hartley and Darren Gough together took seven wickets to leave the home side 120 runs short of the Yorkshire total. Durham were left with the mammoth task of making 331 to win and were never in the hunt after losing 5 wickets for 111, eventually leaving Yorkshire the winners by 144 runs.
In 1998 Yorkshire won by 9 wickets after a splendid innings of by Michael Vaughan. He batted though the innings to be last out for 177. Ryan Sidebottom made 8 in a 9th wicket partnership of 52 and then Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard added 45 for the 10th wicket with number 11 contributing just 13*. Durham’s second innings collapsed to 74 all out with Richard Stemp returning an analysis of 21 overs, 17 maidens, 13 runs and 4 wickets. Two other left-arm bowlers, Paul Hutchison (3 for 22) and Ryan Sidebottom (3 for 13), completed the demolition. Yorkshire knocked off the required 93 for the loss of just 1 wicket. David Boon was undefeated for 139 in Durham’s first innings of 337.
Yorkshire’s most recent visit to the Riverside was in 2000 and resulted in another win - this time by 6 wickets. Hoggard, with 5 for 67 in the first innings, and Gough, with 6 for 63 in the second, put Yorkshire in command and Vaughan was again Yorkshire’s top batsman with 94.
After their defeat at Headingley, Yorkshire will be looking to retain their unbeaten run, not only at the Riverside ground, but in all their matches in Durham, where they have played five and won five.
