Since being promoted to first-class status in 1992 Durham have played Yorkshire in ten County championship matches and have yet to win. Yorkshire have won eight and two have been drawn.

Three of the matches have been at Headingley. The first was in 1993 and is significant in that two Durham players, Graeme Fowler (ex-Lancashire) and Phil Bainbridge (ex-Gloucestershire) each scored a century. They thus became members of a very select band of batsmen to have scored centuries against Yorkshire for two different counties. They were, in fact, the seventh and eighth respectively, to do so. Three others have since joined them.

That 1993 match was drawn after Yorkshire had made 400 in their first innings, with Craig White making 146 - his first first-class century. Phil Bainbridge caused Yorkshire to collapse from 390 for 5 to 400 all out, taking the last 5 wickets in 21 balls at a personal cost of just one run to give him an innings analysis of 5 for 53.

Fowler (138) and Stewart Hutton (73) added 205 for Durham’s 3rd wicket but they trailed Yorkshire by 68 on first innings. Yorkshire declared their second innings at 228 for 8, leaving Durham to score 297 to win. They gave up the chase after losing 3 wickets for 31 and it was left to Bainbridge to play a defensive innings of 103* to ensure a draw.

Yorkshire won the 1999 match by 9 wickets after Durham were dismissed for 114 and 211. David Byas (68) and Anthony McGrath (62) were the mainstays of Yorkshire’s 310, needing only 16 to win in their second innings.

After winning the toss and inviting Durham to bat in the 2000 match, Yorkshire found themselves following on for the first time against the northeastern neighbours. Only Michael Vaughan (34), Darren Lehmann (28) and McGrath (29*) reached double figures in the Yorkshire first innings 129 all out.

In the follow-on Vaughan, with 118, and Lehmann (136) steered Yorkshire to recovery to leave the match drawn.

So, at Leeds, it’s played three, Yorkshire winning one and two draws.
