YORKSHIRE V GLAMORGAN- NATIONAL LEAGUE PREVIEW

National Cricket League

Yorkshire versus Glamorgan

at Headingley

Sunday 25 May 2025

By Roy D Wilkinson

Yorkshire have played thirty matches versus Glamorgan in this competition, which began in 1969.
In addition two have been abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Of the thirty, Yorkshire have won fourteen and Glamorgan sixteen.

Glamorgan have played six matches at Headingley, winning two and losing four.

The closest result was in 1995, when Yorkshire won by just 2 runs after being all out for 157 in the 40th over. Only David Byas, with 54, made any real headway against a very tight bowling attack in which Steve Watkin took 3 for 16 off his eight overs. The Yorkshire bowlers kept even greater control. Glamorgan needed six runs off the final over with four wickets in hand, but could manage only four runs, lost two wickets with Adrian Dale, who made 48, being bowled by the final ball.

In 1991 Yorkshire made their highest score versus Glamorgan in this competition making 253 for 4 wickets. Martyn Moxon (52) and Ashley Metcalfe, with a rousing 96, made off 98 balls, added 116 for the first wicket. Phil Carrick took 5 for 22 in his 8 overs and Glamorgan were always behind the clock making 158 for 8 wickets in their 40 overs to leave Yorkshire winners by 95 runs.

Glamorgan won the latest contest between these two sides, in 2002, when they won easily by 9 wickets with more than 20 overs to spare. David Harrison demolished the home side taking 5 for 26 in his 9 overs. Reduced to 110 for 9 it was left to Richard Blakey (47) and Ryan Sidebottom (30*) to add 64 for the 10th wicket and give the score a respectable look at 167 all out. But a blistering attack by Robert Croft (59) and Ian Thomas (55*) put on 102 for the first wicket leaving Harrison to complete a remarkable personal contribution by hitting 37*.

Matches between these counties in this competition have generally been low scoring affairs. In the thirty games so far played there have been only six innings of 200 or more (four by Yorkshire and two by Glamorgan).

In uncertain weather conditions Headingley on Sunday may serve up another close game.
