Frizell County Championship
Yorkshire versus Glamorgan
at Headingley, Leeds
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
21, 22, 23 and 24 May 2025
By Roy D Wilkinson
Glamorgan first visited Headingley in 1922, the season after they had been promoted to first-class status. They had to wait until their most recent visit, in 1999, to gain their first win. It was by the emphatic margin of an innings and 52 runs - and their first win by an innings in their 103rd match against Yorkshire and their eleventh at Headingley.
Of the other ten, Yorkshire have won three (all by an innings) and seven have been drawn.
The 1999 win was set up by Matthew Maynard’s 186. That Glamorgan recovered from 97 for 3 to post 498 (their highest score versus Yorkshire) was due in part to a 4th wicket partnership of 181 between Maynard and Michael Powell (70). Mark Wallace, in only his second first-class match, made 64*. Yorkshire were dismissed for 140 and, following-on needing 359 to avoid an innings defeat, were soon 93 for 5. Only Richard Blakey stood firm and his 123 was his first century for three seasons. Ryan Sidebottom helped Blakey delay the end with a 10th wicket partnership of 78 - Sidebottom’s share 48*.
Glamorgan’s first match at Headingley ended in defeat for the Welsh team by an innings and 103 runs. Yorkshire ran up 429 for 7 wkts dec with Edgar Oldroyd and Wilfred Rhodes the two centurions with 143 and 110. The only Glamorgan resistance came from Norman Riches who carried his bat for 85* in the Glamorgan first innings of 161. They were dismissed in their second innings for 165, unable to resist the whiles of Abe Waddington, George Macaulay, Wilfred Rhodes and Roy Kilner.
The Welsh county did not appear at Headingley again until 1951 when they again went down to an innings defeat. This time is was Johnny Wardle and Bob Appleyard who did the damage. Glamorgan could muster only 66 and 90 against the spin of Wardle (6 for 21 and 5 for 37) and Appleyard (4 for 24 and 5 for 44). Don Brennan (36) and John Whitehead (58*) rescued the Yorkshire innings - at one time a perilous 85 for 7 - with Appleyard (11) helping Whitehead to add a precious 45 for the 10th wicket to take them to 210 all out and sufficient to bring an eventual win by an innings and 54 runs.
The only other positive result in this series of matches was in 1964 when Yorkshire were winners by an innings and 39 runs. Again it was lower-order batting that rescued Yorkshire from 135 for 6. Chris Balderstone with 50, Don Wilson with 32, and Jimmy Binks (61*) batted well to enable Brian Close to declare at 288 for 9. Tony Nicholson then proved almost unplayable taking 6 for 29 in 16.4 overs to hustle Glamorgan out for just 55. Such was the determination of the Glamorgan batsmen in the second innings that it took 129 overs to bowl them out for 194 - Nicholson again the destroyer with 6 for 44 to give him match figures of 12 for 73 which was to remain the best bowling performance of his career.
