Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy

Worcestershire versus Yorkshire

at New Road, Worcester

There are two remarkable facts concerning the meeting of these two counties in this competition, which commenced as long ago as 1963 and was originally known as the Gillette Cup.

1) In all that time they have met only once - at Headingley in 1982.

2) The best bowling performance for Yorkshire is 2 for 35 in eight overs - by Geoffrey Boycott.

Yorkshire won this 2nd round match in dramatic style by 3 wickets with just three balls left of their allocated 60 overs.

Glen Turner got Worcestershire off to a flying start and reached a stylish century before being bowled by Boycott for 105; Phil Neale (42) and John Inchmore (32*) hit lustily to take Worcestershire to a formidable 286 for 5 wkts. Paul Jarvis conceded the most expensive bowling analysis by a Yorkshire player in this competition, his 12 overs costing 80 runs.

In Yorkshire’s reply Inchmore soon removed Boycott, Richard Lumb, Bill Athey and Jim Love to leave Yorkshire reeling and seemingly out of the match at 38 for 4. David Bairstow joined Neil Hartley (58) in a partnership of 95 to bring Yorkshire back into contention. Chris Old redeemed himself after a wayward bowling spell, making a quick-fire 55* and Graham Stevenson smashed a couple of sixes in his 32*.

David Bairstow was made Man of the Match for his 92.

Yorkshire went on to win against Essex in the Quarter-finals but were then beaten by Warwickshire.
