Derbyshire have played 16 first-class matches at Headingley since their first visit in 1895 which was the first of their three wins on the ground. Yorkshire have won 8 and 5 have been drawn.

They made six visits here until 1932 and then did not appear again until 1954 during which time Yorkshire took them to Sheffield six times, four times to Scarborough, twice to Bradford and once each to Harrogate and Hull.

Derbyshire’s most recent visit was in 2000 when Michael Vaughan was unfortunate to sustain a broken knuckle after making a splendid 155* in a Yorkshire innings of 508 for 5 dec, Mathew Wood with 100 and Darren Lehmann with 95 were the other main contributors with the bat. Derbyshire were condemned to defeat by two incisive bowling spells - one in each innings. First Mathew Hoggard took three wickets for 10 runs in just eight balls to leave Derbyshire 17 for 3 and eventually all out for 239. In the second innings Darren Gough ripped out three batsmen for two runs in just sixteen balls.
Yorkshire won by an innings and 79 runs.

Maurice Leyland hit the highest individual score for Yorkshire in this series with 186 in 1930. Going in at 89 for 2 (soon to become 112 for 5) Leyland began cautiously, his first 50 coming in just under two hours, a little over two hours and 136 runs later he was out. Although Verity spun out five batsmen for 32 and enforced the follow-on, rain prevented what appeared to be a certain Yorkshire victory with the visitors ending on 129 for 4.

On a remarkable first day in the 1932 match Derbyshire were dismissed for just 78 with Hedley Verity taking 6 for 32 in 25 overs. George Macaulay took 2 for 16 off 23.1 overs. By close of play Yorkshire were 265 for 2 wickets. Herbert Sutcliffe and Maurice Leyland opened for Yorkshire and hit up 169 before Leyland was out for 113 (with seventeen 4’s) made in only an hour and 45 minutes.
Declaring at lunch on the second day on 416 for 7 Yorkshire made quick inroads but from 90 for 5 Derbyshire recovered to be all out for 249 in time for Yorkshire to record a win in two days. Verity again did the main damage with 5 for 37 - 11 for 69 in the match, which remains Yorkshire’s best versus Derbyshire at Headingley.

The first Derbyshire visit was in 1895 and resulted in a win for them by 131 runs. Needing 228 to win Yorkshire were on the rack at 21 for 4 with Ted Wainwright, John Tunnicliffe, J T Brown and David Denton all back in the pavilion. They never recovered, and Derbyshire won easily by 107 runs. John Tunnicliffe was run out in both innings.

Derbyshire last won at Headingley in 1988 when, in Yorkshire’s second innings, Paul Newman achieved the best bowling performance of his career by taking 8 for 29 in only 16.5 overs. In contrast the West Indian Michael Holding took 1 for 67 in his 16 overs. Yorkshire, all out for 161 and 192, left Derbyshire to score 184 to win which they did with ease by 5 wickets just before the close of the third of this four-day match.

Five of Yorkshire’s eight wins versus Derbyshire at Headingley have been by an innings margin. Are we to see another?

Since first meeting in 1877 Yorkshire have won 100 of the 195 county championship matches played against Derbyshire, have lost 18 and 77 have been drawn. In addition the two counties have played two non-championship fixtures, in 1894, and won 1 and lost 1.
