HAPPY BIRTHDAY

VIC CRAVEN

23 TODAY

1943
The month of July has seen two tragic losses to Yorkshire cricket. On the 1st, in 1916, Major William BOOTH was killed in action and twenty-seven years later, on 31st July 1943, Hedley VERITY died of wounds at Caserta, Italy. A captain in the Green Howards, Verity was wounded on 20th July 1943 whilst in action on the Catania plain in Sicily. Evacuated to the Italian mainland he died of his wounds despite skilful medical attention by German surgeons and medical staff. Bill Bowes, his closest friend in the Yorkshire team throughout the 1930’s, must have been the first Yorkshire player to learn of Verity’s death. Bowes was a prisoner-of-war at nearby Chieti when two Canadians arrived at the camp to explain that the Italians at Caserta had buried ‘some cricketer guy’ two days earlier, with military honours.

His highest score was 210 versus Worcestershire at Worcester in 1911 and his best bowling 8 for 47 versus Middlesex at Leeds in 1912.
