Tom EMEETT died in Leicester. One of the first great Yorkshire cricketers (and characters!). He played in 299 matches for Yorkshire from 1866 to 1888 - took 1216 wickets at 12.71 each, scored over 6000 runs and took 179 catches. His best performance with his left-arm medium round-arm bowling was 9 for 23 versus Cambridgeshire in 1869 - in Yorkshire’s only first-class match on the Hunslet ground. This, added to his first innings 7 for 15, gave him a match return of 16 for 38. It remained the best match return for Yorkshire until Hedley Verity took 17 for 91 versus Essex at Leyton in 1933. Emmett was a member of the England team to play in the first Test match ever played - versus Australia at Melbourne in March 1877. He was the last professional to be appointed captain of Yorkshire until Vic Wilson in 1960.

Seven weeks later England regained the Ashes at The Oval.
