Hoggard, given the chance to open the bowling, had his best season taking 50 wickets at an average of 25.48, this being the County top aggregate for the season. His 5-50 v Somerset being his best effort, this sustained form and aggression shown in the Championship led to his Test debut against the West Indies. His one-day form was no less spectacular as he topped the averages with the County's best aggregate of 42 wickets at an average of 13.85, on three occasions he took 5 wickets in an innings. This led to his call up for the winter tours with the England senior team.
