Brian Johnston Memorial Trust helps send young wrist spinners to Australia
Two young leg spin bowlers, Adil Rashid, from Yorkshire, and Bhargav Modha from Leicestershire, have been picked to spend two weeks in October at the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide, where they will undergo intensive wrist spin coaching from Terry Jenner - former Australian Test player and coach to Shane Warne.
The players were chosen from a group of 300 aspiring young leg spinners, who were coached this year by Jenner as part of the England and Wales Cricket Board's wrist spin development programme.
Adil Rashid, 15, comes from Bradford and has represented Yorkshire Under 15 as well as England Under 15 this summer and won the Outstanding Player Award at this years Bunbury Festival. Bhargav Modha, 17, played for Leicestershire Under 17 this year.
Their trips are being funded by the Brian Johnston Memorial Trust. They leave on Friday 17 October, return on Saturday 1 November and will be accompanied by ECB National Coaches Andy Pick and David Parsons. Hugh Morris, ECB Performance Director, said: "We are very grateful to have the support of the Brian Johnston Memorial Trust, whose scholarships have made these trips to Australia a reality. Both Adil and Bhargav will benefit hugely from Terry Jenner's vast experience and knowledge of wrist spin bowling.
"The ECB's wrist spin development programme was set up six years ago. Our target is to develop a wrist spin bowler for the England team by 2007, and for at least half of the 18 First Class Counties to have a contracted wrist spinner by the same year."
Mark Williams, Chief Executive of The Brian Johnston Memorial Trust, commented: "Our support for the Wrist Spin programme this year increased to £15,000. Under Terry Jenner's expert guidance, the quality of wrist spinners coming through seems to get better each year. I have seen both Adil Rashid and Bhargav Modha bowl. They both have very bright futures in the game."
The Brian Johnston Memorial Trust (BJMT) was founded in 1995 by Brian Johnston's family and .friends to help further the causes closest to Brian's heart - helping promising young cricketers in financial need and supporting cricket for the blind. The BJMT is now managed by The Lord's Taverners, with whom it joined forces in 1999.
