The ECB today announced a 12-man England Under 19 squad for the first Test Match against South Africa Under 19 at Headingley, starting on Friday 1 August. Nottinghamshire's Bilal Shafayat will captain the team.
Tim Boon, England U19 coach, said, "When South Africa Under 19 came here last time in 1995 Trescothick, Solanki, Flintoff and McGrath played for England while Boucher, Dippenaar, McKenzie and Ntini represented South Africa. So we may well be watching some of the stars of the future in this series.
"We have a well balanced squad and real strength in depth so we are optimistic of our chances. What is particularly pleasing is that, since the advent of the county academies, the young lads coming through seem to have more advanced skills for their age and they are a lot more mature in their knowledge of the game. Standards have risen and that can only be good for the game here."
England U19 will play three Test Matches and three one-day internationals against their South African counterparts this summer.
