Elegant and unruffled, Vaughan's pedigree earned him a call-up for England's tour of South Africa. He was Yorkshire's top-scorer with 895 Championship runs but his final tally was still disappointing for a player of his class and on too many occasions he was out in the first few overs of the innings. His tour de force was against Essex at Chelmsford when he hit 100 and 151, the first time in nine years that a Yorkshire batsman had scored a century in each innings. His off-spinners proved particularly useful in the National League, bringing him 17 wickets.
