Yorkshire's under 16s were overcome by a very strong and talented Western Province School's under 17 side in the first ever schools Day/Night fixture played under the magnificent Newlands lights last night with Rushdie Majiet the South African National Coach in attendance.
Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat but lost a wicket to the second delivery when James Chervak dragged one on. However Joe Sayers held the innings together with steady support compiling stands of 34 with Parkin-Coates, 40 with Captain Nick Whitehill, 25 with Haroon Rashid and 56 with Tim Bresnan. He was bowled in the penultimate over just 7 short of his century. Province fielded a powerful bowling attack, which pinned down the Yorkshire batsmen to only occasional boundaries although the running between wickets was very good. The final total of 160-7 in 45 overs required a top performance in the field and an early breakthrough which came in the third over when Cronje (no relation) top edged Tim Bresnan to be caught by James Chervak running back. However a dropped catch off Durning who went onto make 53 was a costly error. The second wicket stand of 87 between Durning and Durham gave Province the platform they needed and whilst slow left armer David Wainwright had the dominant Durning caught behind and Stiff soon followed with a good delivery for the new batsman Simon also to be caught behind there were no further alarms with Province reaching their target with 11 overs to spare. Durham had a good innings hitting 63.
A somewhat disappointing result but an excellent performance in the field with the batting again failing to flow apart from the magnificent knock by Sayers.
The Tour concludes on Friday with a match against the Black Township of Langa who will also test the resolve of the Yorkshire Boys.
On Monday the party visited the Mathew Goniwe High School to present cricket equipment and made many friends during a coaching clinic. They were also entertained with a performance of an award winning drama play along with songs from the school choir. The visit provided a cultural experience in the black township of Khayelitsha and will be remembered for many years by both sides concerned- a wonderful advert for future relations between the two countries. A visit to Vicki's B & B was also an eye opener!
