After proving to be Scotland's hero in the World Cup, Hamilton returned to Yorkshire to turn in some splendid performances which made him their leading all-rounder with 567 Championship runs at an average of 47.25 and 43 wickets at under 20 runs apiece, figures which would no doubt have been even more impressive if he had not missed a further two matches late in the campaign with a hamstring injury. In five innings at Headingley during the season he never once surrendered his wicket, scoring 232 runs and being only six short of a maiden century against Worcestershire before agonisingly running out of partners.
