Yorkshire County Cricket Club's Future Stadium in the Wakefield Area.
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club Committee decided earlier today to accept the
City of Wakefield Council's bid to house the new Cricket Stadium near Wakefield,
just off junction 39 of the M1.
The Committee over the past few months has carefully considered the detailed bids
from the Wakefield and Leeds Councils respectively and eventually decided that
Wakefield was the best option on which to go forward.
Wakefield's bid from the outset has shown great promise although this is not meant
to detract from the efforts by Leeds City Council to persuade the Club to move to its
particular option. The consultants involved in Wakefield's project are of
international renown, including ARUP ASSOCIATES (who designed the impressive Test
Match Stadia in Capetown and Johannesburg) and KPMG (a market leader in financial
planning for significant stadium development including the English National
Stadium bid, Cardiff Arms Park's successful Millennium bid and Sydney's
forthcoming 2000 Olympic Stadium).
In support of the project, it is intended to make application for funding
assistance from the National Lottery, European Funding and other sports related
grants and from land sales and development. The principle criteria to attract
outside funding is "community involvement" in the envisaged sports complex. It
will include practice pitches for both County and recreational cricket, including
Kwik Cricket facilities and a Cricket Academy, hockey, bowls, tennis and
soccer. Equally important will be greatly enhanced Members facilities in the
Stadium designed to accommodate 25,000 spectators.
Cllr Colin Croxall, the Leader of the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council
commenting on the scheme said,
"It is our intention to create a world class cricket stadium and associated
facilities as the new home for Yorkshire County Cricket Club which will promote
and develop the game of cricket into the next century."
Sir Lawrence Byford, President of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, commented
"At long last our distinguished Club with its outstanding cricketing heritage is
on the threshold of owning its own Cricket Stadium together with the community
facilities that will enable it to progress cricket even further throughout
Yorkshire. We are looking forward to working with the Wakefield Council in
achieving this exciting project towards the next millennium."

1997
Venues
At a meeting of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club General Committee earlier
today (23rd July), it was decided that in the future all AXA Equity &
Law League games on Sundays would be played at Headingley with a
maximum of two in any one year at Scarborough.
All Britannic Assurance
Championship fixtures would also be played at Headingley with no more
than two at Scarborough in any one year.
The Club would like to
take this opportunity of thanking the out grounds for their ready
co-operation in the past. In coming to this decision the Committee was
mindful of the historical ties with the grounds concerned but felt
that the time had come to centralise its resources for the benefit of
the team, who fully support the change, and for the long term well
being of the Club.
